The pilgrimage, which follows the St Cuthbert’s Way, is an annual event at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Mass is celebrated at key points along the way, such as St Cuthbert’s Cave, where monks are said to have rested with the saint’s body, fleeing from invading Danes, and on the beach once they finally arrive. James Powell, 16, enjoyed a very profound experience during the walk. He said: “It was a wonderful experience. Walking across the sands of the Pilgrim’s Path to Lindisfarne, I truly saw God in all things – in the gulls overhead, in the creatures of the sands and the rock pools, in the waters swelling around my aching feet, in all my fellow pilgrims.”
