Laura Bolton, who teaches art at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire, has been successful in a recent competition to choose artists to paint portraits of famous Liverpudlians. The competition, sponsored by the Liverpool Arts Council and a project called Wild in Art, has selected 21 artists to undertake a series of individual portraits. The portraits will be exhibited on streets throughout the centre of Liverpool between February 14 and March 20 under the title: “Liverpool Discovers, Liverpool Greats”. For her study Miss Bolton chose the artist George Stubbs, who not only hailed from Liverpool but also spent some of his life in York studying horse anatomy, a happy coincidence as she comes from Liverpool but now lives in Ampleforth. The portrait of Stubbs, famous for his paintings of horses, has been produced on sheet metal. Miss Bolton completed the painting in acrylic over a period of three days adding a high-gloss varnish to the final product to protect it from the elements. Miss Bolton is no stranger to artistic success. In November 2009 she won a design competition entitled “Liverpool ONE Go Penguin”. The theme of the competition was to design an outfit for a penguin expressing for the Liverpool One shopping centre. Miss Bolton will also have three paintings on show at a new exhibition related to the theme of the “Valentine” located at the Liverpool Arts Academy in Seel Street.
