As Afghanistan marks three years since the Taliban’s return to power, the country continues to grapple with profound challenges, according to the UK’s leading Catholic international aid agency.
The Taliban authorities oversaw celebrations of the third anniversary of their rule over Afghanistan on 14 August at the former US Bagram air base. Large convoys of military vehicles and hardware, including helicopters, accompanied processions of Taliban personnel.
CAFOD – the international aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales – said an estimated 23.7 million people are currently in need of assistance in Afghanistan, representing more than half the country's population, which stands at around 40 million.
