The St Bede’s Literary and Philosophical Society was delighted to be given a rare insight into the world of counter terrorism by Catholic police officer Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Porter. Chief Superintendent Porter is the head of the North West Counter Terrorism Unit. His talk was entitled “A terrorist in a town near you”.  More than 90 students and teachers packed the sixth-form study area, to hear him talk about operations that he had been involved in. They were even given advance information which was about to be broadcast on national television and published in the national and international media later that day. Megan Tollitt, 18, president of the society and head girl, said: “Detective Chief Superintendent Porter gave us a real insight into the murky world of terrorism and all that has to be done to catch and convict the terrorists.” Mr Porter said: “It was a real thrill to speak to these young people. They are the potential leaders of the future and one day they may be called upon to deal with these issues. Talks like these are stimulating and rewarding as they provide another step in the education and development of our young people.”
