The Catholic Herald has partnered with America250 to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, joining national efforts to commemorate one of the most consequential moments in American history.
America250 is the national non-partisan organisation charged by Congress with encouraging Americans to reflect on the country’s founding, honour its history and take part in local and national events ahead of July 4, 2026. The US Semiquincentennial Commission was established by Congress in 2016 to plan the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
As part of the partnership, the Catholic Herald will publish a special series of articles, interviews and reflections exploring the religious, moral and cultural inheritance of the American founding, with particular attention to the role of faith, conscience, liberty and the common good in public life.
The series will examine the Catholic contribution to American history, from early missionary life and immigrant communities to the growth of Catholic education, charitable institutions and public witness. It will also consider the continuing challenges facing religious freedom in the United States and the responsibilities of Catholics in civic life.
The anniversary comes at a moment of sharp political division, but also offers an opportunity to reflect on the principles that shaped the American experiment and the sacrifices made to preserve it.
America250 says it aims to engage Americans across the country through commemorations, educational initiatives, local gatherings and acts of service. It is planning a multi-day national celebration from July 3 to July 5, 2026.
