On his recent visit to Ireland, President Trump said he would “love” to see Irish reunification, that it was “going to happen eventually” and so it “may as well happen now”. With his charmingly idiosyncratic turn of phrase, the American head of state pointed out that, when you look at a map, putting north and south together was “one of the naturals of all time”.
Let’s be honest: this is the kind of boilerplate, inoffensive chat you will hear in New York bars, where the reunification of Ireland and an end to partition has been just over the horizon for as long as anyone can remember. It’s only when you begin to look at the matter in more detail that the supposed ‘inevitability’ begins to recede.
