Bishop James Curry, auxiliary bishop of Westminster, has written to Prime Minister Andy Burnham to ask him to work for the release of Jimmy Lai. Lai, a Catholic British citizen who ran the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper, was sentenced to 20 years in prison under the Hong Kong Government’s national security laws.
In June 2021, the newspaper was raided by police, had its assets frozen and executives arrested. Lai pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of conspiracy to publish seditious material.
