New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is serving the citizens of his city victimhood with a side of misinformation. Mamdani recently shared an article claiming that there has been a recent uptick in violence against transgender people. His post was intended to bolster a longstanding narrative of gender activists: that transgender people are disproportionately targeted by “extremists”.
By convincing us that transgender people face excessive violence and hate, activists hope to bully the American public into supporting extreme gender ideology and interventions. Anyone who voices commonsense objections can easily be smeared as a “hateful” contributor to “anti-trans violence”. The truth is more complex.
The article that Mamdani shared noted an “upswing in violent killings this spring” that killed “at least seven trans people”, strongly implying that transgender people were targeted and murdered specifically because of their gender identity.
However, a Daily Wire report found that “none of the deaths cited in the article [shared by Mamdani] have been classified as anti-trans hate crimes by law enforcement agencies investigating the cases”. For example, the first two incidents listed were clear cases of domestic violence rather than a transphobia-inspired assault. The other four incidents were appropriately ruled homicides rather than hate crimes since there was no evidence that the victims were targeted because of their gender identities.
Transgender individuals deserve the same compassion and protections that justice requires for all human beings. Unfortunately, activists hurt everyone by perpetuating false claims that they are disproportionately targeted or by “affirming” their gender delusions. These efforts encourage them to continue living a dangerous lie, unnecessarily exacerbate anxiety and stress, and potentially even fuel trans-inspired violence. Moreover, they divert attention and resources away from mental health approaches, as those pushing this agenda continue to blindly affirm transgender individuals’ gender dysphoria.
This has not stopped gender activists at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) from promoting overblown hysteria. Just last year, GLAAD published a report claiming that half of all anti-LGBTQ “hate and harassment” targeted transgender people, resulting in 26 injuries and one death. The very first example that GLAAD cites, however, offers zero evidence that the victim was attacked specifically for being transgender.
Another incident GLAAD cites involved a transgender Dollar General employee who was fatally shot in Georgia. Police refrained from labelling this incident as a hate crime because of insufficient evidence. This did not prevent GLAAD from listing the incident in its 2025 report.
To be fair, some of the cases GLAAD cites appear to document genuine targeting and harassment of transgender people because of their gender identity. But the fact that GLAAD blurred the truth in some of its evidence undermines confidence in its overall report. Moreover, evidence indicates that the anti-transgender violence trend is not even slightly as widespread as GLAAD or Mamdani suggest.
Gender activists want you to think that transgender people are being systemically hunted down and murdered. This is false. In fact, a 2017 study found that “cisgender” people – meaning non-transgender people – are murdered at higher rates than their transgender peers. Where is the outrage over that?
Gender activists are shockingly apathetic towards violence endangering anyone outside the “queer” community. When the perpetrator is queer, gender activists would prefer to ignore the violence entirely.
Just look at the recent uptick in violence instigated by transgender individuals. Transgender-inspired violence has been prominent enough in the past few years that the Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project petitioned the FBI to designate “Trans Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism” (TIVE) as a terrorist threat.
The Oversight Project’s brief on the matter notes that transgender ideology and individuals were behind three separate mass school shooting incidents in Nashville, Minneapolis and Colorado.
Tyler Robinson, the young man accused of graphically murdering Charlie Kirk, allegedly did so because of Kirk’s anti-transgender viewpoints. Robinson reportedly texted his boyfriend that he had “had enough” of Kirk’s “hatred” before killing him – right after Kirk was asked about gun violence and transgenderism.
Just last year, a man named Jared Ravizza – who was allegedly transitioning to become a woman – was indicted for stabbing six people. Another man named Collin Bailey transitioned to become “Mia Bailey” before murdering both his parents. In 2023, a young woman who was denied puberty blockers retaliated by killing six people at Covenant Presbyterian School. Americans also recently discovered that the suspect behind the attempted assassination of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022 identified as transgender.
The Oversight Project’s report lists several other violent incidents involving transgender individuals – each of which hints at the unspoken truth that gender dysphoria is a mental illness that deserves to be treated rather than affirmed.
Gender activists have spent years blindly affirming young men and women’s gender dysphoria without any attempt to understand the root of these individuals’ gender confusion. Ignoring obvious signs of mental illness or trauma, they are funnelling people into an expensive pipeline of permanent surgeries and puberty blockers that seem to be exacerbating feelings of confusion and rage.
Gender activists also ignore the countless “detransitioners” who have testified that they regret the life-altering, permanent gender transitions they underwent as minors. These men and women are living proof that “compassion” without truth leaves people confused, afraid and angry – at everyone else’s expense.
If Mamdani, GLAAD and other gender activists truly care about supporting transgender people, they should be eager to understand why so many “queer” people are violently acting out. Rather than ignoring this trend, they should be desperate to discern it.
Instead, Mamdani’s decision to exaggerate data on anti-trans violence is certain to fuel “queer” people’s hostility towards anyone who is not totally on board the gender insanity train – resulting in a worse America for everyone.
