Bishop Mario Delpini has been named new Archbishop of Milan, succeeding Cardinal Angelo Scola.

Bishop Delpini has been vicar general of the archdiocese since 2012 and has lived within its territory for most of his life. The archdiocese is the largest in Europe, with around five million Catholics, and the archbishops are usually seen as potential future Popes.

Two previous archbishops have been elected Pope in the past century - Pius XI and Paul VI. Other famous church figures who have held the position include St Charlies Borromeo and St Ambrose.
