Syrian rebels are increasingly shelling predominantly Christian areas of Damascus, reports the Associated Press. Pope Francis praised Aung San Suu Kyi's commitment to "non-violent engagement in the cause of peace and democracy" during their meeting yesterday (video). Bishop Charles Scicluna has urged bishops to adopt a uniform approach to priests ordered to lead a life of "prayer and penance" because "a comfortable life on a golf course is definitely not what the words 'prayer and penance' mean". Rocco Palmo says that Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga laid out a "programme for the Stateside Church" during his whirlwind US tour. Episcopal priest Philip DeVaul suggests "Pope Francis is going to bring a lot of people back to Rome". William Doino Jr notes that while Paul VI "waited nearly 10 years" to speak dramatically about Satan "Francis took only a day". And Vatican "culture minister" Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi marked the death of Lou Reed yesterday by tweeting the lyrics of the song "Perfect Day".
