The Government is planning to require religious representatives, including priests, rabbis and imams, to enrol in a “national register of faith leaders”, according to the Daily Telegraph. The newspaper claims to have seen a leaked draft of the Home Office’s new counter-extremism strategy. The document says that registration will be compulsory for all faith leaders who wish to work in the public sector and that those who sign up will be subject to government-specified training and security checks. According to the draft, the Government will “require all faiths to maintain a national register of faith leaders” and it will “set out the minimum level of training and checks” faith leaders must have to join the register. The strategy is due to be published this autumn.
