An appeal has been launched to find a bone marrow donor for a Catholic mother from Brighton. Nikki Breaterman, a 45-year-old mother of two, suffers from acute myeloid leukaemia. Her condition is life-threatening and because she has a rare genetic make up, being Irish-European and Burmese, her best hope of survival is to find a perfect '10:10' genetic donor. Nikki and her husband's two children are aged seven and four. The appeal to find a donor has been launched by Nikki's family and friends in her parish (St Mary’s Preston Park). A simple swab or spit test will determine whether someone is a likely match. If an individual does turn out to be a match, then the donation of bone marrow would follow a standard procedure. "I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. My disease has a rare cytogenetic abnormality called the ten-eleven translocation, which put me at a high risk of relapse following chemotherapy. This relapse has now occurred in September 2014 and the search is on," said Nikki. Anyone who has European or Southeast Asian heritage (especially with a Portuguese name) may be a suitable bone marrow donor for Nikki.
