Saturday May 18 sees the beatification of Guadalupe Ortiz (1916-75) in her birthplace of Madrid. She will be the first beatified lay member of Opus Dei, the organisation that helps Catholics to sanctify everyday life. Ortiz taught in universities, set up educational institutions and served the poor. She has been described as having “a big heart and a strong character”.

Many ordinations to the priesthood will take place on Saturday. Among others, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati will gain nine new priests – the largest number for more than 40 years. Boston’s 13 is also its largest number in more than 20 years.

***

Catholics and music lovers will descend on St Dominic’s, London, on Saturday May 25. Sir James MacMillan will conduct the Elysian Singers in his “Marian Motets”, for Mary’s month of May. It starts at 7.30; higher-priced tickets include a wine reception and admission to an interview with Sir James.
