Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi has denounced the coverage of Pope Francis in the latest edition of Rolling Stone magazine, describing it as "superficial journalism". Pope Francis appeared on the cover of the politics and culture magazine alongside the headline, 'The Times They Are A-Changin'. Jesuit Father Lombardi said that while a wide interest in the Pontiff was a positive sign, he was critical of the article's attack on Benedict XVI. “Unfortunately, the article disqualifies itself, falling into the usual mistake of a superficial journalism, which in order to highlight the positive aspects of Pope Francis, thinks it should describe in a negative way the pontificate of Pope Benedict, and does so with a surprising crudeness,” Fr Lombardi said in a statement. The article's author Mark Binelli wrote that Benedict’s papacy was "disastrous" and described the former Pope's apostolic exhortation, Sacramentum Caritatis, as “wonky”. “What a pity. This is not the way to do a good service even to Pope Francis, who knows very well what the Church owes to his predecessor,” added Fr Lombardi.
