Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, will visit England next month to help affirm and strengthen interreligious relations in the country. The programme of the visit will include tours of the Sikh Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha Gurdwara in Birmingham, the Jain Derasar at the Oshwal Centre near Potters Bar, and Hindu temple Baps Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden. Cardinal Tauran will also attend a Together in Prayer for Peace event that will take place at 5pm on June 13 at Westminster Cathedral Hall. At the event representatives from different religions will offer a prayer for peace according to their own tradition. Archbishop Kevin McDonald, the Catholic bishop with responsibility for interreligious dialogue in England and Wales, expressed his delight at the upcoming visit. "This is a unique opportunity for interreligious dialogue, both to strengthen existing good relations, and to make these friendships more widely understood," he said. The visit comes in the wake of the Pope Emeritus's Christmas address in which he highlighted the importance of good interreligious communication. "In man's present situation, the dialogue of religions is a necessary condition for peace in the world and it is therefore a duty for Christians as well as other religious communities," Benedict XVI said.
