Pope Leo XIV has expressed his optimism about the future of the Church in Germany as he encouraged Catholics to find the “true missionary spirit” to reverse declining Mass attendance. Speaking on September 28 in an in-flight press conference with about 80 journalists, the Holy Father reflected on his visit to France, European rearmament and widespread concerns about AI.
When asked about the decline of the Church in Germany, where less than seven per cent of Catholics attend weekly Mass, the Holy Father noted: “People have said that about France in the past and yet we saw what happened over the past four days.”
